Cost Per Meal: Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a meal cost at home?
For most US households a home-cooked meal runs between $2 and $5 per person. The exact figure depends on your grocery spend, how many people you feed, and how many meals you actually cook instead of buying out. This calculator divides your grocery bill by the number of home-cooked meals to give you the real number.
How is cost per meal calculated?
Cost per meal equals your grocery spend divided by the total home-cooked meals across everyone in the household over the same period. We normalize weekly or monthly spend, multiply people by meals per day by days in the period, then divide your spend by that meal count.
Why does cost per meal drop with a bigger household?
Bigger households buy in larger quantities and waste less per person, so the spend spreads across more meals. Cooking 2.5 meals a day for four people produces far more servings per dollar than cooking for one.
Does this include eating out?
No. It measures home-cooked meals only, so set meals per day to how many you actually cook. Restaurant and takeout meals are usually two to four times pricier per serving and belong in a separate budget line.
