Tipping Guide by Service Type

Standard tipping rates vary by service type and region. In most US restaurants, 18โ€“20% is standard for sit-down service. Tipping is optional for counter service but increasingly expected. For grouped bills, calculate the tip on the pre-tax subtotal, you don't need to tip on sales tax.

Restaurants

15% = minimum acceptable. 18โ€“20% = standard. 20โ€“25% = excellent service. Calculate on pre-tax amount.

Other Services

Hair/nails: 15โ€“20%. Taxi/rideshare: 15โ€“20%. Hotel housekeeping: $2โ€“5/night. Delivery: 15โ€“20% or $3โ€“5 min.

Splitting Bills

Divide the check evenly, then apply tip to each share. Or calculate total tip on the full bill and divide that equally.
